Shillong Polytechnic is the principal governmental specialized institution in the North East Indian province of Meghalaya. Situated on the periphery of Shillong and bounded on the north by steep inclines, this region is ideal for more advanced educational pursuits. A kilometre distant, the vicinity of North Eastern Hill University imparts an aura of academia to the location. The Shillong Polytechnic is located in Mawlai Kynton Massar, Shillong-22, approximately 5 kilometres from the city centre of Shillong, the state’s capital.
The Institute is subject to the oversight and regulation of the Director of Higher and Technical Education, a government agency in Meghalaya. It is established in October 1965 under the composite state of Assam, Shillong Polytechnic. Initially, the foundation operated out of the Tribal Research Institute in Mawlai, Gaushala, utilizing temporary sheds as workshop rehearsals and office spaces as study halls and laboratories. Considerable design was the primary curriculum at the time, with an annual intake of sixty students. Following the destruction of the Tribal Research Institute by fire in 1968, Shillong Polytechnic later relocated to leased quarters and ultimately to its current location.
The foundation came under the authoritative supervision of the Government of Meghalaya after the bifurcation of Assam in 1972. From 1993 until the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE) was established, its academic oversight remained with the State Council for Technical Education Assam. Shillong Polytechnic strives to remain informed about the latest technological developments to enhance quality control, push the boundaries of innovation, and overall operational efficiency.
